How do you define leadership?

Leadership is one of those unique things that is difficult to put a real label on. Leadership definition is a challenge because there are as many definitions of leadership as there are leaders in the world.

A leader has many roles such as a President of a country, a General, CEO, entrepreneur, coach, mentor, athlete, teacher, minister as well as parent and other personal roles. There are also different levels of leadership that enter into the equation.

The two basic ones being; someone who has been put into an authority position and you have to follow them. The second being an authority figure who has inspired people and have gained the trust and respect of others so people choose to follow them. This can easily apply to family, community, business or political.

Leadership skills for you to master

One of the leadership skills that is commonly talked about is being able to influence others instead of using authority. The art of listening is a required skill as this allows you to understand what people are thinking and where they are coming from. People who listen care and people who care listen.

Having empathy for others. Effective communication skills are needed in order for people on any level of leadership to advise others what their role is and what action to take. This is especially important in any situation such as a battlefield because lives are at stake. The ability to make tough decisions understanding that with every decision there are consequences potentially both good or bad.

A great leader needs to know how to bring out the best in people. To inspire them to be there best. Great leaders need to develop the insights to recognize an opportunity and when and how to act on it.
