Do You Have An Effective Branding Strategy?

When you hear the word branding what does that mean to you?

If you go back 20-30 years it was common that companies were doing branding through logos and images.

McDonald’s for instance became famous for the golden arches.

Everywhere you went you saw them and this helped to trigger brand recognition.

Their branding strategy was to use the golden arches to create an impression in your mind.

This type of branding strategy costs millions of dollars per year and only fortune 500 companies could afford to play that game.

The psychology of colors and images were used to keep their product on your mind.

It obviously worked because McDonalds became one of the top brands in the world.

Apple, under the guidance of Steve Jobs became the wealthiest brand in the world.

I remember reading an autobiography of Steve Jobs and he was brilliant at branding strategy with the images (Apple logo) and colors.

Another thing that Jobs did that was masterful was changing the color of the headset of I-Pads and I-Phones when he used white cords.

Big companies used the expertise of psychologists in their marketing in order to have more effective brand strategies.

Times have changed and so has the branding strategy approach

The global economic crash of 2008 brought the world to its knees financially.

The internet and technology was shifting gears and then social media emerged.

Social media on its own has completely altered the way we connect, engage and communicate.

Business both big and small was scrambling to try and find a way to take advantage of the the social media platforms.

Although we see so much of social media, most people forget that it is still in its infancy.

One of the reasons that social media platforms have become such a challenge is that they were built on a social sharing mentality.

It was not business driven at first.

That has certainly changed now.

Your branding marketing needs to include all the forms of marketing you are doing

This is the part that has got big companies really confused.

They have been using traditional forms of branding marketing with logos and images.

Now the offline (if you have it and you should) needs to be coordinated with all forms of online strategies.

This includes your website or blog, social media, paid advertising and local markets if this is applicable.

It requires several areas of expertise and statistics indicate that the social media and online advertising is not working for most businesses.

Its kind of like a cruise ship that leaves the harbour and realizes they forgot something but in order to turn around they have to go all the way out of the canal.

One of the words that is emerging in the marketplace that is becoming significant for businesses to pay attention to is being adaptable.

Blockbuster and Kodak are two companies that come to mind that did not adapt.

Where are they now.

New companies out of the gate now sometimes have an advantage because they are starting fresh with the new branding marketing strategy.

Brand positioning is a new opportunity for people with a long term vision

The internet has created an abundance of new opportunities.

A lot of these new opportunities are running virtual companies.

This is actually amazing leverage when you think that you can run a global business right from your home.

The brand positioning is all about you becoming an authority in your niche.

How do you become an authority?

You pick a niche and a target market that resonates with you and you master it.

While you are mastering it you can start to provide value for lots of people.

When you provide value and offer solutions to people’s problems or pain then you are looked at as an authority.

Providing value first before you ask for the business helps to create know, like and trust.

Remember, you are doing this from a small office or the comfort of your home.

Everyone you need to do work for you can be anywhere in the world because your work is digital.

Take a look at Mashable’s  founder Pete Cashmore.

He started Mashable when he was only 18 years old by himself from home.

Within 10 years he had driven Mashable to become a $100 Million company.

Strategic branding takes a lot of planning and careful execution of your marketing

How do you want people to perceive you?

A lot of brand positioning today is done with the founder front and center versus the company logo or image.

Chris Brogan, a social media guru, talks about how facial recognition was built into our DNA and that we remember faces better than symbols.

Social media has taught us that you can have your face out there and plastered all over the internet.

If your strategic branding process is using you as the front and center piece then you want to pay careful attention what you publish.

You can establish yourself as an authority by providing value, serving others and building solid relationships.

Always remember that  it takes a long time to build trust and it can be destroyed almost overnight.

I have seen too many internet marketers take that trust they built for granted and start pounding their list to death.

Can you imagine what will happen when you build an army of raving fans because of the value you bring to your marketplace?

Your tribe, as Seth Godin, founder of Squidoo and best selling author, refers to it, will explode your business for you.

How Incredibly Successful People Think

Building a brand is a strategic process

Blogging has become very common today and lots of internet marketers use them to build successful businesses.

Blogging is also another way to position yourself as an authority in your niche.

You can’t build your business on social media because you don’t own the data or control the environment.

This is where the strategic branding process of blogging serves your vision.

You connect, engage and communicate with people on social media but quickly point them towards your blog.

One common mistake many internet marketers do is to not get their message to market match right.

If you are promoting everything under the sun then you can’t become an authority.

You don’t want to be talking about biz opportunities one day and landscaping the next.

Stick to your target market and build on that.

You can create secondary streams of income within your niche once you have established your authority.

You message and marketing should always be congruent because if someone lands on your website/blog and it is not clear they will be gone.

If you use landing pages (capture pages) to drive traffic to your blog make sure what you are promoting is all that they see.

If you like simple things then guess what, so do a lot of other people.
