Overcome procrastination – the dream killer…

Are you an action taker or do you like to put things off?

If you don’t learn how to overcome procrastination it will overcome you.

Hopefully you are not one who lives by the quote, ” Why put off until tomorrow, when you can put it off until the next day.”

If you are an action taker you will find it very frustrating dealing with people who are perpetual procrastinators.

Have you ever noticed that the people who have not learned to overcome procrastination have an extra day added to their calendar.

It is called someday.

Someday I will fix the house, someday I will fix the car, someday I will go start that new business.

Creating a shift to overcome procrastination

Let’s go back, way back, when you were a little kid.

Your parents and siblings (if you have any) played a major influence on you.

They were your role models. The habits and values of your parents created a direct impact on you.

Even if you don’t remember everything you were like a little sponge soaking it all in.

Thousands of impressions were lodged into your subconscious mind and as you got older these impressions impacted your beliefs about you and helped form your habits.

All these things have played a role in how you started off your life as an adult.

The limiting beliefs you may have developed is actually just a story you have bought into.

In order for you to create any form of change in your life you need to develop awareness.

What are your core beliefs?

What are your habits?

Remember, habits are things you do without even thinking about them.

Do a simple experiment, just go back and see if you can recall all the things you did today!

If you have a routine, like work then you were running on auto pilot the majority of the day.

Your awareness is the precursor to change.

Preparation for the procrastination cure..

The 3 primary causes of procrastination are:

1) Laziness

2) Fear of failure

3) Perfectionism

Laziness is a very bad habit and I can guarantee you if you want to be successful at anything you must change this.

Fear of failure comes from that story you bought into about your limiting beliefs.

Failure is simply an opportunity to learn.

If everyone stopped each time they failed we would probably still be riding horseback on dirt roads.

Perfectionism is a habit.

It’s partially from an insecurity to move forward and an obsession. What is perfect?

It’s a mental block and in order to overcome procrastination you have to accept the idea that it’s okay to start right where you are at.

Putting the procrastination cure to work

Now that you have become more aware of the root causes of procrastination you have to start a new journey.

Procrastination is a habit and in order to overcome procrastination you have to create new habits.

Notice I did not say change your bad habits.

You can’t change a habit.

It is something that is ingrained into your subconscious mind and you do it on auto pilot.

You replace the bad habit with a good habit.

It takes time so you need to be patient.

Fears are perception of your reality so you need to learn to overcome fear.

What inspires you?

What motivates you?

What is your why?

Sometimes when you are stuck you need to use a more powerful reason to change.

If you have a why like, doing it for your kids, doing it for you significant other or doing it for your community…this will help you overcome procrastination because people will do more for others than they will do for themselves.

Fear, laziness, limiting beliefs and perfectionism will keep you stuck so start by identifying your why.

Are you struggling trying to be successful? Are you trying to change and figure it out on your own?

Installing new success habits

A big part of the procrastination cure is installing new success habits. You have created a higher level of awareness and identified your “WHY.” Here are 5 habits of success for you to install into your life to help overcome procrastination.

1) Write down your goals… If you have no goals to aim for you will continue the same pattern of habit.

2) Read your goals out loud every day… This starts the process of creating new positive impressions on your subconscious mind.

3) Find an accountability partner… When you state your goals to someone else, you are creating a new responsibility to do what you said you would.

4) Take action towards the accomplishment of your goals every day… Remember, installing new success habits is part of the process of change.

5) Choose wisely who you spend your quality time with… If you are hanging out with procrastinators you have a high probability that you will maintain the same habits.

P.S. Oh yeah! Take Someday off your calendar. You won’t be needing it any more.

Successful habits for you to overcome procrastination..

Now that you have this heightened sense of awareness you can create any change you want in your life.

The question now is, “Who do you want to become?”

You are learning to overcome fear simply by taking action and accepting the fact that you will experience some failures along your journey. So what?

There is a price to be paid for success and like personal development and business coach Brian Tracy says, “You have to pay up front and in full.”

It might not be easy but it will be worth it.

You will have new self confidence, higher self esteem no more Someday’s.

When you want to overcome fear or overcome procrastination or anything for that matter, once you are taking action on a daily basis, you will experience the magic of momentum.

It’s like riding a bicycle, at first you have to gain your balance and then you have to push hard on the pedals to get yourself going but after you are moving forward with far less resistance.

You will be starting a whole new exciting journey to creating a new life for YOU!

What do you want? More time freedom? Financial freedom? To take more vacations to exotic places? You deserve to have a life by design instead of default, don’t you?
