  1. Businesses fail to create a social media marketing plan. They dive in without knowing what outcome they want.  You need to know what winning looks like in your business and where are your customers hanging out. Who is your customer? How are they interacting on social media?

2.  Business gives up too early on their social media marketing plan. There expectations are normally too high. Business believe that because everyone is on social media they should be flocking to their business.

Business needs to determine the social media currency.

Currency can be in the form of knowledge or value provided.

What value can you give to your target market?

What are you going to give away to educate and engage them?

You need to determine what you want them to do.

This may sound foolish but you can’t just give people information and expect them to know what to do.

You need to decide on a call to action.

Do you want them to call you, fill out a form or come over to your blog?

Your social media planning should have a content plan that answers their questions.

The content could be on your blog and you promote that content in your social media accounts and you push invite them with links to go to your blog to get more info.

You don’t own the database on social media and you can be booted out or have your account deleted overnight.

Your social media planning should include remarkable content to have them read, like, comment and share.

Engagement is critical on social media.

Make sure your content is organized.

People scan not read posts.

Use great subject lines that captivate their interest and use good header subjects in your post.

The example I will give here is based on 1 blog post per week for 12 weeks.

5 posts will be for awareness. Education about the solutions for the problems or pain in their business or life.

5 posts will be for evaluation. How your customer should formulate a buying decision. What they need to look at in order to make an educated decision.

2 posts will be decision making content. Why they should buy from you. You have given them knowledge and value. Then you moved them along the process to how to make the best decision and then you position yourself as the right place to buy from.

Promotion schedule –

You can Tweet multiple times a day because tweets go off the main scree very quickly.

Facebook on the other hand does not like lots of the same content so you do 1 post a day there.

LinkedIn is the same as Facebook, you post once.

You can join congruent groups that fit your target market and post your articles in each of the groups once daily. This gives you a lot more exposure.

Apply the 80/20 rule. 80% is value and knowledge and 20% is promotion.

Mix this up and you turn them off.

5 steps to success with your social media strategy

  1. Listening to conversations. What do they need? What are they interested in? What do they want?
  2. Move into building community. Everyone likes to be a part of something or a targeted group.
  3. Broadcasting. You want to engage with them by starting a conversation. Conversation not selling at this point
  4. Content. Lead with value. Provide content that creates solutions for them.
  5. Conversion. You want to direct them in some way with a call to action. Get them to raise their hand, ask for help. Be intentional with the call to action to generate results.

Build community and make sure you place the follow icons of your social media accounts on your blog.

When people go to your blog and find value in the content you are creating they will want to connect with you on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn or wherever you are.

Give people a reason to want to follow you.

On your social media accounts you also want to have small call to actions by having them like, comment and share your posts.

Many businesses have mixed up their social media marketing strategies with traditional marketing.

Traditional marketing methods need to be tossed right out the window as they don’t work on social media.

You have to be ready and able to provide solutions.

You have to keep in mind the shelf life of a Tweet of Facebook post is less than a day.

Depending on how many people you have as friends or followers it could be minutes or hours.

The shelf life of your blog posts on your blog is forever.

Remember that this includes videos or posts.

If you have lots of people following you it can be a very short time for people to see your broadcasts.

You need to understand there are two buyer types.

There is the now buyers who have done there homework and research.

They are on the verge of making their buying decision.

You also have future buyers.

These are people who are thinking about making a purchase.

They have not even begun the research process yet.

Future buyers are your best bet because you get to start with your process of education to evaluation to a buying decision.

The now buyers have most likely formulated their buying decision and you did not have enough time to influence them.

You want to give people multiple conversion elements such as a phone number to reach you, an email or send a request through your blog.

Everyone likes to connect with a different process.

2 steps to start leveraging your efforts today

  1.  Take a deep breath and slow down. It’s not a sprint it is a marathon.
  2. Your niche – how is your business a monopoly – what can your customers get from you that they can’t get from someone else. You want to position yourself as an authority and you want to create a differentiator. Stand out don’t blend in.
