You Have Email Leads – Now What?

The money is in the list – wrong!

If you have been in the internet marketing world for any length you have no doubt heard the phrase, “The money is in the list.”

Although it is true that everyone online should be building a list, the money is not in your list.

The money comes from the relationship you build with that list.

Lazy internet marketers try to take all the shortcuts they can and just build an email leads list and pound away to get people to buy their stuff.

Email leads are important but what is more important is what you do with those email leads.

The simple question is, “what do you do when you subscribe to something or buy a product and multiple times a day you get an email pushing you to buy another product?”

The vast majority of people do what you would do, click their mouse on the unsubscribe button and they are gone.

So, what do you want your subscribers or customers to do?

Stick around or leave?

Provide value for people and serve them with great content that helps your email leads list solve a problem.

You nurture and build a solid relationship with them so they will want to buy other things from you and tell their friends about your great products and service.

How do you build an email leads list?

There are many ways to capture names and email addresses to build your list.

If you have a blog you want to place an optin box near the top of the page which is above the fold.

Above the fold simply means when you open your web browser to a website whatever appears on your screen without having to scroll down is above the fold.

An optin box is a a place where you have people who have landed on your website enter their name and or email address.

Think of yourself as a magnet that wants to attract people to you.

Ask yourself what would people want that would encourage them to give me their name and email.

Most people are looking to solve a problem or a pain they have in either their personal or business life.

Position yourself as an authority in a specific niche and provide value that solves those common issues.

The other great way to build a list is with affiliate marketing.

Whenever you are promoting products or services you want to at the very least drive the traffic to a landing page where you capture a name and or email.

You then get to communicate with those email leads when you want.

Effective email list management

One of the things you want to remember is that you have a whole assortment of people at varying stages of the buying process and they might be interested in other things you have to offer.

One of the smart things to do very quickly in your follow up emails is to be asking questions.

You can either pretend that you are psychic and guess what your email leads list wants or you can use my sophisticated new technology system, “ASK”.

When you ask caring questions in a genuine way, people will tell you everything.

This allows you to start doing what is referred to as email segmentation.

Email segmentation is a process where you separate email list.

This allows you to laser focus your follow up emails to address very specific points.

One of the other key components of email list management is when to send your follow up emails and how often.

Opt In Email Lists

There is lots of data to back up the best time to get the most opens for follow up emails is between 7:00 A.M. and 8:00 A.M.

The how often question depends a lot on how you want to build your relationship with your email leads.

Too often and you will drive them away and not often enough they will forget about you.

What I teach my students is to follow the 80/20 rule and this gives you lots of latitude with your email list.

80% should be value content and 20% promotion with links to buy something.

I usually recommend 1 time per day 5 days a week but you need to monitor the metrics on your emails such as opens and click through rates.

Email list management is a process that you need to work at to create lasting relationships with your potential customers.

What is an autoresponder?

If you are new to internet marketing you might not be aware of all the tools and resources you will need.

One of the best things you can invest in and this is not an option but a must have component, is an email autoresponder.

The optin box I was referring to above is connected to your email autoresponder and this allows you to capture all the names and emails and comiple them in a list.

The email autoresponder allows you to run multiple promotions on the same product or service so that you can track the results.

Tracking is critical in internet marketing but I will go into that in another blog post.

I have used several email autoresponders over the years and one of my favourites is Aweber.

You can read about it and/ or subscribe to it by clicking this link. It is simple to use and they offer lots of training videos to get set up and their customer support is awesome.

You can connect landing pages and run multiple campaigns at the same time to build your email addresses list.

A good autoresponder is one of your most essential tools.

This is where you will create your follow up email sequence for the promotions you are running and you can easily create up to a year and have it all preprogrammed on autopilot.

Email addresses list 101

There are generally two schools of thought in the internet marketing space regarding the capturing of names and/or email addresses.

The more information you want typically the more you have to offer to get that info.

Some internet marketers go after just the email addresses and others go after the name and email addresses.

One of the reasons in favour of capturing the name is that you get to personalize the follow up emails and this will increase your open rates.

The other thought is that if you are only asking for an email address people are more likely to give it to you.

The approach I usually teach is to create a lead magnet which is a PDF document, a video training or some form of value that you are going to offer them in exchange for their name and email address.

I’m sure there is lots of information you can create or produce a a short video that is value based not sales pitch based.

5 simple guidelines to follow for your opt in email lists

  1. Treat your email leads the way you would want to be treated.
  2. Master creating email subject lines as this will help you crush it with your open rates.
  3. Follow the Pareto Principle which is the 80/20 rule. 80% value based follow up emails and 20% promotion with links to your buy page.
  4. Use surveys to ask what they want instead of guessing. (make sure the surveys are short, such as 2-3 questions)
  5. Establish yourself as an authority in your niche and engage, connect and communicate with your email lists. Always remember that at the other end of all technology is another human being and with the click of the mouse they are gone forever.
