How To Overcome Procrastination

Do you suffer from procrastination syndrome?

The truth is that we are all responsible for our success or failure. You have created the life you are living by the decisions and choices you made or lack of them. The ironic thing is that often we sabotage our own success by talking about what we want and then procrastinating to take action. Do you know people like that? Maybe this sounds familiar? This becomes a raging battle between your conscious mind talking about it and your subconscious mind giving you all the reasons and excuses not to do it.

This internal conflict will spin you around like the tilt-a-whirl at the carnival. If you have ever been on one of these rides you know exactly what I mean. This becomes self defeating behaviour that make you stay stuck in mental mud.

The leading causes of procrastination

There are three known primary causes of procrastination. The central theme underlying all these is F.E.A.R. (false evidence appears real) . Fear stimulates a lot in the mind, but mostly what it does is create inaction and where there is no movement , death is sure to follow. Death of a relationship, death of an opportunity and the death of a dream.

1) Fear of failure paralyzes people. Most people are afraid to fail because they will be judged, criticized or blamed.

2) Lack of motivation implies there is no will power or desire to sustain an action to accomplish a result. Accepting mediocrity as a way of life leads to frustration, envy and jealousy for what others accomplish.

3) Perfectionism. If you are looking for things to be perfect to start to begin, you will never begin. You can continually analyse things until you are blue in the face trying to attain perfectionism, and surely you will always come up with something to change. It is an endless chase and just another excuse not to begin and move forward.

Do you know yourself as well as you think you do?

It has been proven by science that over 85% of what we do on a daily basis is driven by the subconscious mind. This is you on auto pilot acting from the habits you created. Awareness of what your habits are is a challenge because you do things without even thinking about it because you have repeated the process hundreds or thousands of times.

Take for example; you get in your car and instead of planning on taking the normal route you decide to take another way. You plant this seed in your head but when you arrive at the point you normally turn or get off your subconscious mind tells your hands to turn here and before you know it you are on the same path as before. I’m sure you can come with countless examples of this.

Awareness is the precursor to change and in order to alter a thinking pattern that has become a habit you have to replace it versus change it. It takes at least 21 days to instill new habits in the mind.

Procrastination will suck the life right out of YOU!

Everyone has unlimited potential. To accomplish great things requires work or practice, practice,practice. No great accomplish was achieved without great effort. What’s holding you back? Do you have limiting beliefs about yourself?

Many people I have met in my life did not exactly grow up in a nurturing supportive environment. I’m not talking about not being loved. I’m talking about being told you can do or be anything you want. Being encouraged to do your best. Receiving acknowledgment and recognition for what you did instead of just criticism, blame or punishment for what you didn’t do.

Limiting beliefs is a story you have made up about yourself that you believe to be true. This creates a lack of confidence to act. The fear of making mistakes. Do you know anyone who makes mistakes? Right, everyone! No one is perfect but if you have limiting beliefs you will prefer procrastination over action. It is the safe road. Or so it seems.



You can be your own worst enemy or your own best friend!

Do you like that person you see in the mirror every morning? Well, you should because you are going to have to live with that person more than anyone. If you keep putting off your dreams and your life it will take its toll on your self esteem. Low self esteem = low self confidence.

Not taking action to achieve your dreams is like buying a boat and going down to the water and just sitting in it. What’s the point of having it? Take chances and be bold with your dreams. You do deserve to have a great life, don’t YOU? You will fall down, you will mistakes and this will just prove that you are human like the rest of us. Start where you are and take action.
