The Debate: Knowledge is Power – Is It?

The Secret to A Great Life is Knowledge

The debate has raged on for many years about whether knowledge is power or not. The school of thought was based on the fact that the more education you received the better job you have and thus a better life. Intellectuals will always argue that knowledge has power. The people that run educational institutions will also tell you that getting a degree or degrees will put you at the top of the totem pole of success.

I am not writing here to debate whether it is a good idea or not to get an education. Education , regardless of what you decide to do in life is a necessity, but the question should be asked , What type of education? Formal education provides you one type of knowledge and self education provides you with another type of knowledge.

Knowledge

Who is The Slave and Who is The Master?

If you take a look at the professionals who spend a great deal of time getting the higher degrees, such as Doctors, lawyers, accountants and MBA’s, you will find that more often than not these professionals work for somebody. If working for someone, which was always the norm up until 5 years ago, is what you desire than maybe formal education is right for you.

If you look closely at it, you might find it fascinating that you go to school for ( in the case of a lawyer) for 7 years after you have finished high school, and someone else is usually is in control of what you are worth. They decide your value. This seems a little odd to me. What is very interesting is that many of the highest paid people on the planet are entertainers and athletes. Most of which don’t have a high education degree.

Does Knowledge Really Put You in Charge of Your Future?

In the last 20 years there has been a significant shift in mindset regarding knowledge. Knowledge on its own simply has no power. If you learn something and never put that knowledge to work than the knowledge is power theory goes out the window. That learned knowledge must be applied to have a real value. There are many educated derelicts who think mere intelligence makes them better than others.

I remember a good friend of mine was a professor at university and when she looked around she discovered that her colleagues lived in average homes, drove average vehicles and lived a modest lifestyle. There is always a trap we fall into when we just follow the herd like sheep and never take a close look at what is really going on around us.

Step Out of The Box and Think For Yourself

Before you think that I’m bashing formal education, I think that everyone needs to evaluate what resonates with them. If you want to be a teacher you need to get your degrees. If you want to be an accountant or an MBA, or a Doctor you also need to get your degrees. I am simple suggesting that we open up the debate to what type of education is the most effective and relevant for what you want. Corporate America was demanding for years that you have formal education in order to get hired. I agree if you want to be an engineer or a scientist.

If you are a top executive in a major corporation you need communication skills, marketing skills and people management skills. These are best learned in the School of Life where you are APPLYING what you know based on a combination of things with all the real life variables required to make sound decisions.

Andrew Carnegie – One of The Wealthiest Men In History

Andrew Carnegie was a powerful business person who lived in the early 1900’s. His story and life is what prompted Napoleon Hill to write his classic- Think and Grow Rich…which has been responsible for the creation of more millionaires than any other book. Andrew Carnegie used the power of everyone else’s knowledge and applied it in his Mastermind Group, of which he attributed most of his success to. He did not have any formal degrees. His wealth in today’s dollar value was estimated at $798 Billion…imagine. Many of the people who Carnegie employed were  formally educated. If you look at the wealthiest people in the world such as Bill Gates, Richard Branson, Warren Buffet,Donald Trump, Robert Kiyosaki and many others, they did not receive formal education but yet they control vast amounts of wealth.

Applied Knowledge Will Always Conquer Knowledge on its Own

Even Albert Einstein who was one of the leading geniuses in history applied his knowledge to create the breakthroughs in science he discovered. The question I have for you is, What do you want out of life? Regardless of what you decide, you need to have education whether it is from a formal institution or if it is from the School of Hard Knocks. Learning is something everyone should do throughout their entire life. You need to examine very closely what it is you want your life to look like.

Working for other people, having them tell you what to do, when to do it and what you are worth is a choice. Taking responsibility for how your life can be is an unlimited potential waiting for you. Once again, this is a choice. Get educated regardless of what you decide, just make sure that you apply that knowledge and become the best you can be at whatever you choose.
